Cubicle life…

The sterile smell of grey and ugly carpets filled my lungs as I badged in at work. It was becoming a robot with the everyday keystrokes and task. Little movements to adjust my back and bottom. Reaching to remove my spectacles for desired eye breaks between calls. Calls coming in from across the country, the different accents and walks of life definitely kept you on your feet. And how I don’t miss it!

Micromanaging and politics aren’t for me! I never kissed ass before and I am not going to start now. I take pride in the work I do and don’t need to brown nose to anyone for recognition or growth. It’s okay if you are – I just wasn’t built that way. I can truly say I miss a handful of people, company events and the extra cool benefits. What I did was pretty awesome too, but let’s not get into that.

Cubicles feel like you are trapped and blocked off from your peers. Yet because you are blocked off, you are more productive and focused – at least I am. That being said, I’m on the fence with open-work spaces,. The boxed cubicles can go, maybe a great designer someday will find the balance. They are practical, private and personal, however, are a sight for sore eyes and costly for the employer. I have to say I am not a fan of cubicles (most aren’t) but I do like that they help with noise cancellation. I even use to take breaks and or hide under my cubicle. Leave it to me to turn it into more than a desk. I did appreciate my hidden naps. Until next time!
